Supporting Effective Communication

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has created a Supporting Effective Communication e-learning module that depicts the perspective of NDIS participants of what effective communication looks like, and how it supports choice and control.

Effective communication enables people with disabilities to have choice, control and make decisions about their own lives. Through effective communication, workers can support people to express themselves safely and be heard.

The module was co-designed and developed by people with disabilities, NDIS providers and disability workers.

Module Content

The module is made up of three topics that provide you with information, scenarios, tips, and practical actions that can be taken to reduce risks associated with the communication support needs of people with disabilities. The Supporting Effective Communication module looks at:

  • What effective communication looks like and how it supports choice and control.
  • The different ways in which we communicate.
  • Times when effective communication is very important.
  • How workers can support effective communication with people with disability.

The module includes a downloadable ‘Supporting Effective Communication Checklist’ and links to useful resources.

NDIS Worker Learning

The Supporting Effective Communication module is designed to support NDIS providers and workers in meeting their obligations under the NDIS Code of Conduct. It also supports registered NDIS providers in meeting their obligations under the NDIS Practice Standards.

All NDIS providers are encouraged to include the module in their induction process for workers, and to encourage existing workers to undertake the module over time, as part of their ongoing learning.

This training forms part of a suite of learning modules for NDIS workers, including the Worker Orientation Module ‘Quality Safety and You’ and the New Worker – NDIS Induction Module. Before completing the Supporting Effective Communication module, workers should complete the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission’s Worker Orientation Module – Quality, Safety and You.
